چکیده

The bidomain model is a system of partial differential equations used to model the propagation of electrical potential waves in the myocardium. It is composed of coupled parabolic and elliptic partial differential equations, as well as at least one ordinary differential equation to model the ion activity through the cardiac cell membranes. The purpose of this paper is to propose and analyze several implicit, semi-implicit and explicit time-stepping methods to solve that model, in particular to avoid the expensive resolution of a nonlinear system through the Newton-Raphson method. We identify necessary stability conditions on the time step ∆t for the proposed methods through a theoretical analysis based on energy estimates. We next compare the methods for 1D and 2D test cases, both in terms of stability and accuracy of the numerical solutions. The theoretical stability conditions are seen to be consistent with those observed in practice. Our analysis allows us to recommend using either the Crank-Nicolson–Adams-Bashforth method or the second order SBDF method. These semi-implicit methods produce a good numerical solution; unlike the explicit methods, their stability does not depend on the spatial grid size; and unlike the implicit methods, they do not require the resolution of a system of nonlinear equations.

Towards the Numerical Simulation of Electrocardiograms

We present preliminary results of the numerical simulation of electrocardiograms (ECG). We consider the bidomain equations to model the electrical activity of the heart and a Laplace equation for the torso. The ionic activity is modeled with a Mitchell-Schaeffer dynamics. We use adaptive semi-implicit BDF schemes for the time discretization and a Neumann-Robin domain decomposition algorithm for...

Algebraic Multigrid Preconditioners for the Bidomain Reaction–diffusion System

The so called Bidomain system is possibly the most complete model for the cardiac bioelectric activity. It consists of a reaction–diffusion system, modeling the intra, extracellular and transmembrane potentials, coupled through a nonlinear reaction term with a stiff system of ordinary differential equations describing the ionic currents through the cellular membrane. In this paper we address th...

Inexact BDDC methods for the cardiac Bidomain model

The cardiac Bidomain model consists in a reaction-diffusion system of PDEs for the intraand extra-cellular cardiac potentials coupled with a nonlinear system of ODEs accounting for the cellular model of ionic currents. Fully implicit methods in time have been considered in a few studies, see e.g. [16] and references therein. As in most of previous work (see [18] for a review), in this study we ...

Parallel coupled and uncoupled multilevel solvers for the Bidomain model of electrocardiology

The Bidomain model describes the spread of electrical excitation in the anisotropic cardiac tissue in terms of the evolution of the transmembrane and extracellular electric potentials, v and ue respectively. This model consists of a non-linear parabolic reaction-diffusion partial differential equation (PDE) for v, coupled with an elliptic linear PDE for ue. The evolution equation is coupled thr...

Removing the Stiffness of Elastic Force from the Immersed Boundary Method for the 2D Stokes Equations

The Immersed Boundary method has evolved into one of the most useful computational methods in studying fluid structure interaction. On the other hand, the Immersed Boundary method is also known to suffer from a severe timestep stability restriction when using an explicit time discretization. In this paper, we propose several efficient semiimplicit schemes to remove this stiffness from the Immer...
